The Evolution of Connection: 75 Years and Counting

Seventy-five years ago, staying connected looked very different than it does today.

In 1950, phone calls were prime technology. Calls were a special form of communication, and long distances were reserved for special occasions. Communication moved at a slower pace, and many rural communities had limited access to reliable telecommunications. While larger cities continued to expand their networks, rural areas missed out on the growing benefits of connectivity.

That's where our story began.

From the start, our purpose was simple: help our neighbors stay connected. That meant bringing telephone service to rural communities and building connections where they mattered most.

Over the years, technology has changed, but the need for connection has remained the same.

As telephone networks expanded throughout the 1950s and 1960s, communication became more reliable and accessible for more homes and businesses across rural America. In the decades that followed, new telecommunications technologies continued to bring people together.

By the 1990s, the internet was beginning to transform the world. Email changed how organizations connected with customers, and dial-up internet opened new possibilities for communication, education, and commerce.

That transformation gained momentum in the early 2000s. Broadband internet became more widely available, mobile phones became part of everyday life, and people began to expect fast, reliable access to technology wherever they were.

The smartphone defined the 2010s, ushering in the age of streaming services, cloud platforms, social media, and mobile apps. Together, these innovations transformed how people learn, work, and stay connected, making reliable internet an essential part of everyday life.

Today, connectivity is more important than ever. Fiber internet, managed technology services, cloud solutions, cybersecurity, and business communications help power everything from remote work and telehealth to smart homes and growing businesses. The tools may look different than they did in 1951, but the mission remains the same: connecting neighbors to what matters most.
